The Boss Brings on the Wrecking Ball

Posted by Giselle On October - 13 - 2009

What’s Up, What’s Up YPA?! So, as promised, I have to GUSH about my Bruce Springsteen experience. There is nothing quite like seeing ‘The Boss ‘on his home turf—he’s from New Jersey if you didn’t know.

In fact, not only was Bruce (we’re chums, so I’m totally allowed to call him by his first name) performing to a massive crowd at Giants Stadium, but his concert series was the final musical event at the old Giants Stadium. After this football season the old one is being torn down to make more parking room for the brand new Giants Stadium that was constructed right next door. The first three nights of the concert sold out so fast that I only got to go because they tacked on two extra nights due to the high demand for these once-in-a-lifetime tickets.

Bruce opened the show with a new song “Wrecking Ball,” that he wrote just for the concert series at the soon-to-be-destroyed stadium. In the middle of his set, he played the entire Born to Run album from start to finish. Bruce decided to play one full album during all five concerts of the series after he had overwhelming success doing so in Chicago. Other nights he performed Born in the USA and Darkness on the Edge of Town, but everyone knows Born to Run is the best one (tee hee).

Even in my nose bleed seats, seeing Bruce live was like an out of body experience. From children to people close to my grandparents’ age, everyone was up and dancing in their seats and the weather held all night despite the threatening clouds. As promised, he played a full three hours, and while he played a few of the big hits like “Outlaw Pete,” “Human Touch,” and “Dancing in the Dark,” he did not neglect to play some of the lesser-known songs for the big fans.

Overall it was an amazing night, and I have to be grateful for the New Jersey Light Rail system. The train picked us up in Hoboken and dropped us right at the stadium, and booze and sing-along songs were abundant in every train car. It was an excellent way to arrive, and a fun, communal way to revel in the joy of the event on the way home.
