Burning Streets - Is it in Black and White?

Posted by admin On November - 23 - 2009

cisitinblackandwhitemedI haven’t heard a good all around punk album in awhile. Most everything coming out of the punk genre these days either seems to be thrash or some variation of pop-punk. Sailor’s Grave must have seen the need for this when they signed Burning Streets. Their album Is It In Black and White? is quite possibly the first good, fast upbeat street punk album I’ve heard since the Street Brats Destination Nowhere single.

The Boston band reminds me a little bit of what Dropkick Murphy’s sounded like in the early days crossed with The Briggs or early Social Distortion. Gang vocals perminate throughout the album along with snappy three cords and quick drums making it a real tough and gritty but still well produced. 13 Hours is a great tour song and could get me through many hours on the road easily. Tea Party is up-tempo and catchy while delievering a message to politicians and citizens to wake up out of their haze. My favorite track though was Final Chance (For First Impressions) which reminded me of early Face to Face records. It had me singing the chorus all day long. Buring Streets did a great job and I hope they keep it up. This album is clever, quick and catchy which is exactly what a good punk or street punk album should be.

Position: Intern

Album of the Week:  Lost Ground- Defeater

Weekly Song Obsession: I was jamming to E-Town Concrete on the way home from Disneyland, so Mandibles has been stuck in my head all week

Movie you have to see or saw this week: I haven’t seen any movies this week unfortunately but I keep hearing good things about Law Abiding Citizen and I still have to see Zombieland!

Most Random Text Message: “AFWA. Anti Farming Women of America” in reference to me and my friend’s dislike of the Farmville obsession on Facebook

Most Embarrassing: I screamed while falling up the stairs at the Rainforest Cafe, drawing the attention of many people around me and, since I bruise very easily, I had big bruises on my shins the next day. Also, someone at school is out to redecorate the inside of my locker, this week’s addition being saran wrap. Last week was silly string.

Geek Indulgence: I went to Disneyland twice this week dressed in my Minnie ears and gushed over the insane amounts of adorable kids there. I want them alllll!

Funniest Follower Tweet: @myrasshole IM HER MOM! NOOO SHE’S NOT! Hahaha laughed for a good 2 minutes. Check out the kittens inspired by kittens video on Youtube if you haven’t seen it. Adorable and hilarious!

Favorite Staff Moment: When the boss told me to write my first review earlier this week!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory: My grandma invites 2 ladies that goes to her church with her one that’s like in her late 20s and the other in her 60s to Thanksgiving dinner. The older one is so intelligent and the younger one is a complete airhead so it’s hilarious to try to watch them have a conversation. We started talking about the OJ murder trial, and she referred to DNA as “people stuff” and it took everyone a good 20 minutes to figure out what on earth she was talking about.

What are you thankful for: The people in my family who act as family should, my friends, and music. I swear I would be lost without those things

Teenage celebrity crush: Well considering I am still a teenager, I have a good range of people I can contribute to this list. My “always” crush is Johnny Depp he can never stop being sexy it’s impossible. Currently, Joseph Gordon-Levitt from 500 Days of Summer, James Franco, Josh Duhamel, and Ryan Reynolds top the list. Oh and I’ve had a pretty consistent girl crush on Megan Fox

What’s it like being an intern for YPA Press: It’s a lot of fun! I was nervous at first, but the staff was super considerate and helped me through my first times doing certain things. I think it’s awesome to help to make a contribution to the music scene that has really become my life. I also love when my friends ask me about the website and then they start to like it and read it too.

Whats your staff nickname?: Em.I.T! I love it, Justin gave it to me like my second day as an intern.

Do you have a boyfriend? : I do not have a boyfriend. I’ve never really been a boyfriend kind of girl, but I think that the fact that all my close friends are guys and they are the people I trust the most and have the most fun with might intimidate some guys.

Are you easy to get along with?: I would like to think so. I hate not getting along with people, unless they give me a reason not to like them. I hate people that are rude just for the sake of being rude or to make themselves seem tough, it doesn’t get you anywhere. I love making new friends, so being amiable to others is pretty necessary.

Most embarrassing moment of the week: I dragged my boyfriend to knitting store (poor soul) and spent a while picking out yarn and such, and after all my fuss I forgot the bag of stuff on the train and lost it all :(

Funniest follower tweet: Chelsea Lately: “Carrie Prejean actually sounds like she’d be a good catch.”

Favorite Staff Moment: Finding a new writer, Stephanie! :)

What is your favorite thanksgiving memory?: Thanksgiving at my brother’s house with his roommates. The food tasted particularly good.

Teenage celebrity crush?: Like I teenager I think is hot? That’s gross and against the law.

What’s your staff nickname?: I don’t have one I don’t think, unless people talk smack behind my back (Editor’s Note: I call Giselle “Amazuring” due to her last name being Mazur. Or the “indie rock goddess.”)

Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?:  <3 Happily so for over a year.

Are you easy to get along with?: But of course! No seriously, it’s pretty hard to upset me, and I love to be social, so it takes a lot to get on my nerves.

Most embarrassing: Having my Grandmother and Mother tell everyone at Outback that it was my birthday and that I was a well known journalist. Nothing like family pride to embarrass the hell out of you.

Geek Indulgence: Finally figuring out there are really useful apps for my Ipod Touch. The Kindle app has changed my life! Love that I can read books on the treadmill and listen to music. Reading Batman: Hush and drooling over Jim Lee’s version of Catwoman. Lastly my pension for all things Sarah Jessica Parker. I LOVE SJP and she was on the cover of my Elle magazine this month. Hotness.

Funniest follower tweet: mamaxwolf @JustinYPA 80s pop makes me vomit aqua net and leggings

Favorite Staff Moment: This week it’s been getting the interviews from Anne Lindfjeld, Jayme Foxx, Mary Mattern and Dana Gordon. Also the new releases I got in from Salior’s Grave Records. Both reviews will be up next week.

What is your favorite thanksgiving memory?: The year Butch and Judy (my surrogate Mom and Dad) made all the guys sit in one room and the girls sit in the other room. This lastest for about 5 minutes because the TV was in the room the guys were sitting in. So instead of all of us sitting in the nice dining room, we cramed into the kitchen to watch football and talk smack. Then afterwards everyone in the house falling asleep at the same time with a beer in their hands.

What are you thankful for?
: This past year and a half of my life. I’ve made some incredible friends, followed my heart and am now living my dream come true doing this as my career. I’m thankful for my big sister Dana and the rest of the family I really like (you know who you are.) I’m thankful for my health (because I didn’t have it for awhile.) Thankful for the new Skarhead CD because it’s been what 10 years since we’ve heard anything new haha. I’m also thankful for Mary Mattern and Jamey Jasta who continue to provide inspiration and motivation to succeed.

Teenage celebrity crush?: When I was a teen it was all about Debbi Harry from Blondie, Bettie Page and Stephanie Seymore (still actually have a crush on Stephanie.)  Also had/have a HUGE crush on Candace from Walls of Jericho since I was like 16-17.

What’s your staff nickname?: Boss, Shithead (thanks to Kat hahaha.), Jay.

Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?: That would require me actually having free time enough to meet anyone and date haha.

Are you easy to get along with?: I don’t know to be honest, you’d have to ask staff. I know I’m in a good mood usually after noon. Definitely not a morning person I can tell you that.
