Just cause men tend to have shorter hair, doesn’t mean that a quality haircut doesn’t matter.  Unless your head is pretty much shaved all the time, a well executed cut will make a world of difference.  When hair is cut only with clippers and a guard, the result will look alright at first, but deteriorate over time as it grows out.  That’s because clippers operate very similarly to a lawn mower, and cut the hair to the same length, no matter what.  This would work out well, if the head was perfectly round or square.  It’s not.  Thus, the hair will be uneven - a fact that will magnify as it gets longer.  You need to see someone who will either use scissor-over-comb or clipper-over-comb;  the techniques that inspired clipper guards to begin with.  The hair is held with the comb to determine length and then cut with either a shear or clipper.  If your stylist/barber insists on using a guard, they should go back through after clippering with one of the aforementioned techniques to even up the mistakes of the guard.  Your hair will grow out so much nicer and you shouldn’t be jumping for a haircut in 2 weeks.  A careful stylist or barber will take the time to really detail the edges of a cut: the front, around the ears, and the nape of the neck.  You will most likely pay more than $15 for these haircuts - you may even have to go to a salon.  Trust me, the difference will be huge.

Unless your hair is superfine and gets oily by the end of the day, do NOT shampoo every day.  That “fluffiness” that annoys 75% of my clientele could be avoided by not shampooing every day.  Get your head wet in the shower, scratch at the scalp, do all the stuff you would normally do, just don’t shampoo.  If your hair feels dry, condition it, but it’s not a necessary step.  Let your hair get a little dirty, you will like it.

Use product.  I know, I know, you just don’t have time for your hair!  The fact of the matter is that it takes between 10 and 20 seconds to apply some product to dry or damp hair.  Wow, 15 seconds.  I can see how you didn’t have time for that!  Seriously - and especially if you just shampooed your hair - you need something in your hair to give it definition.  You should really talk to your stylist, and since I have you going to better stylists and barbers, they should have some great suggestions.  Product is really the only way to get your hair to look different from day to day.  If you have a suit job this is an absolute must.  A little grooming crème or clay can really just give hair a little extra polish without looking unnatural, stiff, or greasy.  Pomades, waxes, and gels tend to have more hold and way more shine, lending themselves to more classic men’s looks like pompadours.

Thanks to better quality haircuts, less shampooing, and product use, you will start having more control over your hair and getting the look that you really want.  Any of you with specific styling or cut questions; please don’t hesitate to write me!
